An early sign of dementia has been uncovered

Decreased activity of the Notch3 signaling pathway can be used as a biomarker of vascular aging and neurodegeneration. This discovery may aid in the development of targeted therapies to prevent and treat age-related neurodegenerative diseases.

It is known that during normal physiologic aging, there is a progressive decline in the functioning of various organ systems, including the vascular system, which subsequently reduces blood flow to the brain, which in turn leads to vascular dementia. Such patients experience cognitive decline, memory loss and behavioral changes.
